Summary

Twenty-five-year-old Sgt. Gray Phillips is at a crossroads in his life: stay in the Marine Corps or get out and learn to be a civilian? He’s got forty-five days of leave to make up his mind but the people in his life aren’t making the decision any easier. His dad wants him to get out; his grandfather wants him to stay in. And his growing feelings for Sam Anderson are wreaking havoc with his heart…and his mind. He believes relationships get ruined when a Marine goes on deployment. So now he’s got an even harder decision to make: take a chance on Sam or leave love behind and give his all to the Marines.

Twenty-two year old Samantha Anderson lost her husband to an IED in Afghanistan just two months after their vows. Two years later, Sam is full of regrets—that she didn’t move with her husband to Alaska; that she allowed her friends to drift away; that she hasn’t taken many chances in life. Now, she’s met Gray and taking a risk on this Marine could be her one opportunity to feel alive and in love again. But how can she risk her heart on another military man who could share the same tragic fate as her husband?

Excerpt

THIS WAS ONLY TEMPORARY, I reminded myself, as Samantha so sweetly kissed me back. I'm only here for a short time I reminded myself but as I felt her tongue stroke the side of my tongue, as she nipped her teeth against my lip, I wanted to just drown in the sensation. Her scent filled my head and the air around us shrank until all I knew was her small body sitting so close to mine. I moved my hand from her shoulder to cup her neck and angled her face for deeper penetration. I licked every inch inside of her mouth until the taste of her was all that I knew on my tongue.

And all that time I stared in to her green eyes and not once did she look like she was anywhere but right here with me. I saw my reflection there. Her heartbeat was made wild by my kisses.

And temporary was the farthest thing from my mind.

Jen Frederick Interview

Gray and Sam have an explosive first meeting where they end up making out in the back room of a bar. In your opinion is this a good way or bad way to begin a relationship?

It totally depends on the couple. I know of individuals who have cooked up at a bar and are still married 20 years later and I know people who dated for years and broke up. I don't think that an explosive encounter will always lead to a permanent relationship but I don't think it can prohibit one either.

When Gray looks at Sam, what does he see?

He sees someone who is courageous and willing to pursue whatever it is that she wants. He knows that she's devoted and stubborn and loyal. Those are attributes that he hasn't encountered in women who he could see as a potential mate for life. It takes a special person to stay strong and steady while their spouse is gone for long periods of time. Gray  needed someone that he could count on and he finds out that Sam.

Gray is an amazing guy — he is strong, caring, a dedicated Marine. Does he have any flaws?

He has a lot of flaws. But his largest law is his tendency to jump to conclusions and his unwillingness to take chances. Trusting Sam was something outside of his comfort zone but if he hadn't taken that risk, he would've ended up alone.

Rock climbing, boating, skydiving — your couple goes on lots of adventures, but nothing is quite as exciting as the strong feelings that develop between them. When does the couple realize that their relationship isn’t temporary?

Sam's feelings for Gray grow with each outing but she sees in him a kindred soul. She see someone who has suffered loss and has really come out about yet and because she's so understanding it allows her to become more vulnerable. Gray needed someone he could take care of but who is also largely independent. For Sam I think the realization that she has stronger feelings for Gray come upon her gradually  but for Gray, it really is the skydiving incident that causes him to realize that it would be worse if he lost her than if he walked away from her.

Gray and Sam aren’t the only couple featured in UNRAVELED. Heroes and heroines from your previous Woodlands novels also make appearances. What is it like for you to revisit these characters?

I love revisiting the older couples by I tried to strike a balance between bringing back old characters that some new readers might not be familiar with and  making sure longtime readers of this series get little rewards in seeing how their favorite couples are doing.

Is there another Woodlands couple in progress?

Yes I'm writing Finn's story right now. He's in love with a sister but he realizes which one almost too late.
